PP, PE restarts emerge across Mid-East, but supply remains fragile by Esra Ersöz
The rally driven by the Middle East supply-shock— which pushed PP and PE prices to record or pandemic-era highs across Asia and Europe — started to crack three weeks ago as China began taking advantage of widening arbitrage opportunities. Since then, Middle Eastern PP and PE offers have also started to ease. The return of some PP and PE plants in the Middle East, together with inventory sales and delayed cargo arrivals, has also helped calm earlier shortage fears... 18-05-2026
European PP market slips from 4-year highs as buyer resistance and imports trigger correction by Manolya Tufan
The European PP market has started to retreat from four-year highs, marking the first downward correction since the outbreak of the war after prices surged by around 115% between late February and early May amid supply disruptions and soaring feedstock costs. Following weeks of sharp gains fueled by elevated propylene costs and limited import availability, the market is now showing clearer signs of reversal as buyer resistance intensifies and competitive import cargoes gradually return... 13-05-2026
War-driven frenzy fades: Türkiye’s PP and PE markets retreat from unsustainable highs by Merve Madakbaşı
Türkiye’s polyolefin markets have entered a broader correction phase, with both import and locally held PP and PE prices easing further amid fading panic buying, deteriorating downstream demand, and tightening cash conditions. After nearly two months of war-driven volatility and aggressive price inflation following the outbreak of the US–Iran conflict escalation in 2026, buyers have increasingly shifted to hand-to-mouth purchasing patterns, unwilling to replenish stocks at historically elevated levels ahead of the long May holidays... 11-05-2026
Indonesia’s PP, PE markets tumble from record highs on import-duty cuts, more downside in sight by Thi Huong Nguyen
Indonesia’s PP and PE markets have entered a clear correction phase after weeks of aggressive gains, with both import and domestic segments reversing course amid shifting fundamentals. Import prices have softened in line with the broader regional downturn, while domestic prices have plunged sharply following consecutive rounds of deep cuts from a major local producer... 08-05-2026
Asia-Europe freight rates largely erase war-driven gains, supporting China-Europe polymer arbitrage by Esra Ersöz
Container freight rates from Asia to Europe have retreated from their early-April highs, largely erasing the limited gains triggered by the Middle East tensions. The latest movements suggest that freight markets have remained broadly disconnected from geopolitical developments, with underlying supply-demand dynamics continuing to dominate pricing... 07-05-2026
Polypropylene (PP) is a product group produced by the conversion of propylene monomer through a process of polymerization. Polypropylene (PP) is the world's second largest polymer in terms of consumption. There are two main types of PP: Homo-PP and PP Copolymer.
Homo-PP (PPH) is further divided into various grades, such as raffia, injection, fiber, film, BOPP and non-woven. Homo-PP is used in various applications, such as sacks, gift wraps, carpet yarns, kitchenware, automotive parts, food packaging, sanitary pads, diapers and wet wipes. PP Copolymer, which is made more durable by the addition of ethylene monomer during the conversion process, is used in household appliances, automotive and electrical parts and pipe applications.
Looking at the most important net buyer and supplier countries in the polypropylene (PP) market, China stands at the top of the list of importing countries. As of 2020, China alone realizes 25% of the world’s total PP imports. China is followed by Türkiye, which imports 10% of the world’s total PP production, while Italy occupies the third place in rankings. South Korea, Malaysia and Germany comprise the top three main PP suppliers.
