Cost of Middle East war for Türkiye: Polymer markets surge to 2021–2022 highs, PE exceeds pandemic-peaks by Merve Madakbaşı and Esra Ersöz
The outbreak of the Middle East war in late February has triggered a relentless bullish rally across Türkiye’s polymer markets, sending prices for PP, PE, PVC, PS, ABS, and PET sharply higher. What initially began as a cost-driven uptick quickly evolved into a supply-led surge, as disruptions to key Middle Eastern production hubs, logistical bottlenecks, and soaring freight and insurance costs tightened availability across the board... 14-04-2026
A tale of two markets: Why India’s PVC is crashing while polyolefins are rising by Shibu Itty Kuttickal
The Indian polymer market is witnessing a stark and dramatic divergence, leaving converters and distributors navigating two entirely different economic realities. While PP and PE prices continue to climb on the back of upstream volatility and domestic supply tightness, the PVC market has entered a tailspin, dismantled by low-priced imports and aggressive price cuts from local producers... 13-04-2026
Middle East war cost for Europe: Polymer prices surge back toward pandemic-era highs by Manolya Tufan and Esra Ersöz
The outbreak of the Middle East war at the end of February triggered a sharp upswing across Europe’s polymer markets, with prices rising at varying magnitudes depending on product fundamentals. Polyolefins led the rally by a wide margin, while other polymer chains also moved higher, albeit at a more moderate pace, largely driven by cost inflation rather than imminent supply shortages... 08-04-2026
UPDATED: Middle East supply disruptions spread across key hubs by Esra Ersöz
*Updated following the airstrikes on Assaluyah Hub in Iran and Jubail Hub in Saudi Arabia on April 7, 2026 – The effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz and escalating geopolitical tensions have sent shock waves across global petrochemical markets, triggering steep price hikes since the onset of the war. The Middle East, a critical supplier to Asia, Europe, and neighboring regions, holds a dominant position particularly in polyolefins exports, making any disruption in the region immediately felt across global supply chains... 07-04-2026
ChemOrbis and TTCP seminar on the Middle East War’s Impact on the Petrochemical Chain draws strong interest by ChemOrbis Editorial Team
At the webinar titled “How is the Middle East War Shaking Global Petrochemical Markets? What Lies Ahead for Türkiye?”, held on April 2, ChemOrbis Türkiye Market Intelligence Manager Merve Madakbaşı and Dr. Mevlüt Çetinkaya, founder of TTCP Training and Consulting Industry and Trade Ltd., comprehensively discussed the disruptions caused by the war across the energy and petrochemical value chain... 03-04-2026
Unlike other polymers that are derived from crude oil and natural gas, Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is part of the chlor-alkali industry. The main raw material used to produce PVC is sodium chloride. Caustic soda and chlorine are made via the electrolysis of sodium chloride. While caustic soda has its own uses, ethylene dichloride (EDC) is made by the chlorination of ethylene and chlorine, and is used primarily in the production of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). In the final stage, PVC is produced by polymerization of VCM.
PVC is divided into two categories: emulsion PVC and suspension PVC. While emulsion PVC (E-PVC) has a limited area of use, suspension PVC (S-PVC) enjoys a greater area of use. S-PVC grades are characterized by K values. K67-68 is the most commonly used PVC type. PVC K67-68 is used in profile and pipe applications and has a direct relation to the construction industry. Due to its dependence on the construction sector, PVC is also directly affected by the economic performance of countries, either positively or negatively.
PVC K64-65 is also used in the manufacture of pipes and profiles. K58 is used in rigid applications, such as injection molding, and the manufacture of credit cards and food packaging. K70 is used in the manufacture of shoes, cables, hoses, shower curtains, tablecloths and stationery.
Looking at the top buyers and sellers on a country-based breakdown, the USA is at the top of the list of largest exporters with a market share of more than 20%. Taiwan is the second largest PVC supplier, followed by Germany. India is the top PVC buyer in global markets by a long way. Although China has reduced its dependence on imports with new PVC capacities it has commissioned over the last 20 years, it still ranks as the second largest PVC importer in the world. In addition, China has the world's largest acetylene-based PVC capacities. China is followed by Türkiye and Italy, having almost the same level of market share in PVC imports.
ChemOrbis Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) prices and Plastics News section contain information on the market trends, as well as supply-demand factors and production costs that determine the pricing, statistics on imports and exports, along with maintenance shutdowns, restarts, and new capacities related to PVC facilities.
