Türkiye’s PP and PE markets gear up for January hikes as supply dwindles
by Merve Madakbaşı
Polyolefin prices hit bottom in the first week of December as buoyant demand and low seller margins helped markets snap a long losing streak. Year-to-date low prices for most PP and PE grades attracted interest from several buyers and traders who had postponed their purchases until the Plast Eurasia. Easing sales pressure before the new year, suppliers have already taken a firmer approach for PP, while PE is projected to follow suit soon. Yet, it remains to be seen whether the potential hikes will be absorbed by the markets next month...

Local PE prices end 2024 on soft notes in China
by Thi Huong Nguyen
China’s domestic PE prices were volatile in the past few weeks. After recording some cautious increases in mid-December, the markets have entered the second half of the month with fresh drops. Firm production costs and capacity losses – driven by maintenance shutdowns – have remained on the table; however, low buying enthusiasm and concerns over growing supply have dampened sentiment further and prompted sellers to issue downward adjustments...

Europe PP, PE outlook for 2025: Battle of margins amid supply surpluses and trade flow shifts
by Manolya Tufan  and Esra Ersöz
Polyolefin markets began 2024 with a transportation crisis driven by Red Sea turmoil, fueling steep price gains in Q1. Prices then trended downward in subsequent quarters, with brief rebounds unable to match Q1 levels. Global overcapacity and weak demand were key factors, as producers tried to adjust output to protect margins, but with little success...

Middle East PP, PE outlook for 2025: A double whammy of low demand and new capacity additions
by Nada Samir  and Esra Ersöz
Saudi Arabia, the UAE and East Med markets have all experienced much less volatility this year than they did last year, although PP and PE prices have been on a downward trajectory in the last quarter. Early expectations for January point to a potential shift in prices while geopolitics and capacity additions continue to cast a pall on the region for the rest of the year...

China, SE Asia PE outlook for 2025: Oversupply dilemma deepens with new capacity surge
by Merve Sezgün
As 2024 draws to a close, major PE markets across Asia continue to face significant challenges driven by weak demand, a sluggish global economy, and persistent oversupply. This year has been particularly harsh for petrochemical producers, who have endured shrinking margins despite scaling back run rates or extending plant shutdowns...

About ChemOrbis Polyethylene (PE) prices and Plastics News

Polyethylene (PE) is a product group produced by the conversion of ethylene monomer through a process of polymerization. Polyethylene (PE) is the world's most common plastic in use today. It is divided into three groups: Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE)

Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is used in greenhouse covering materials, stretch and shrink films while Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) is mostly used in packaging and plastic bags. High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), on the other hand, is further divided into film, injection, blow molding and pipe grades and it is used in a variety of products and applications. HDPE film is used in the manufacture of bags and HDPE injection is used in the manufacture of fruit crates. HDPE blow molding is used in the manufacture of cleaning and cosmetic bottles while HDPE pipe is used in infrastructure applications.

When looked at the most important buyer and supplier countries in the Polyethylene (PE) market, the USA tops the list of net PE exporters as it accounts for over 20% of the world’s total PE exports. Although far behind the USA’s share, Singapore, Canada and Belgium follow in the list. China yet again ranks as the biggest importer, accounting for more than 30% of the world’s total PE imports as of 2020. China is followed by relatively smaller markets, such as Türkiye, Italy and Vietnam.

ChemOrbis Polyethylene (PE ) prices and Plastics News section contain information on the market trends, as well as supply-demand factors and production costs that determine the pricing, statistics on imports and exports, along with maintenance shutdowns, restarts, and new capacities related to PE facilities.
