War-driven frenzy fades: Türkiye’s PP and PE markets retreat from unsustainable highs by Merve Madakbaşı
Türkiye’s polyolefin markets have entered a broader correction phase, with both import and locally held PP and PE prices easing further amid fading panic buying, deteriorating downstream demand, and tightening cash conditions. After nearly two months of war-driven volatility and aggressive price inflation following the outbreak of the US–Iran conflict escalation in 2026, buyers have increasingly shifted to hand-to-mouth purchasing patterns, unwilling to replenish stocks at historically elevated levels ahead of the long May holidays... 11-05-2026
Indonesia’s PP, PE markets tumble from record highs on import-duty cuts, more downside in sight by Thi Huong Nguyen
Indonesia’s PP and PE markets have entered a clear correction phase after weeks of aggressive gains, with both import and domestic segments reversing course amid shifting fundamentals. Import prices have softened in line with the broader regional downturn, while domestic prices have plunged sharply following consecutive rounds of deep cuts from a major local producer... 08-05-2026
Asia-Europe freight rates largely erase war-driven gains, supporting China-Europe polymer arbitrage by Esra Ersöz
Container freight rates from Asia to Europe have retreated from their early-April highs, largely erasing the limited gains triggered by the Middle East tensions. The latest movements suggest that freight markets have remained broadly disconnected from geopolitical developments, with underlying supply-demand dynamics continuing to dominate pricing... 07-05-2026
Low-cost PP, PE gain favor as SE Asian buyers turn increasingly price-sensitive by Thi Huong Nguyen
Southeast Asian PP and PE markets have entered a softer phase, with prices moving sideways or trending lower as the recent upcycle loses momentum. Despite ongoing supply constraints, particularly the continued absence of Middle Eastern offers, market direction has been increasingly dictated by demand-side weakness and the growing availability of competitively priced Chinese and off-grade cargoes... 05-05-2026
Role reversal: Iran seeks polymers from Türkiye amid war disruptions by Merve Madakbaşı
The US–Iran conflict that erupted in the Middle East at the end of February has not only shaken global commodity markets and fuelled price inflation, but also severely disrupted regional supply chains. Significant production losses across crude oil, energy, and petrochemicals, together with bottlenecks linked to the near paralysis of the Strait of Hormuz, continue to weigh on trade flows... 04-05-2026
Polyethylene (PE) is a product group produced by the conversion of ethylene monomer through a process of polymerization. Polyethylene (PE) is the world's most common plastic in use today. It is divided into three groups: Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE)
Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is used in greenhouse covering materials, stretch and shrink films while Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) is mostly used in packaging and plastic bags. High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), on the other hand, is further divided into film, injection, blow molding and pipe grades and it is used in a variety of products and applications. HDPE film is used in the manufacture of bags and HDPE injection is used in the manufacture of fruit crates. HDPE blow molding is used in the manufacture of cleaning and cosmetic bottles while HDPE pipe is used in infrastructure applications.
When looked at the most important buyer and supplier countries in the Polyethylene (PE) market, the USA tops the list of net PE exporters as it accounts for over 20% of the world’s total PE exports. Although far behind the USA’s share, Singapore, Canada and Belgium follow in the list. China yet again ranks as the biggest importer, accounting for more than 30% of the world’s total PE imports as of 2020. China is followed by relatively smaller markets, such as Türkiye, Italy and Vietnam.
ChemOrbis Polyethylene (PE ) prices and Plastics News section contain information on the market trends, as well as supply-demand factors and production costs that determine the pricing, statistics on imports and exports, along with maintenance shutdowns, restarts, and new capacities related to PE facilities.
