Türkiye PE market slumps as US cargoes topple Mideast offers by Merve Madakbaşı
After tracking a soft trend in August under the summer lull, PE extended losses into September as fresh offers from Middle Eastern suppliers failed to sustain rollover attempts. Most producers had to yield to sharply discounted US cargoes, which have been actively offloaded into the region for select grades. The pressure was particularly acute in LLDPE, eroding Middle Eastern suppliers’ pricing power and forcing concessions... 15-09-2025
US pressure sends LLDPE film prices to multi-year lows in SEA by Thi Huong Nguyen
In Southeast Asia’s LLDPE film market, expectations of a September rebound on the back of seasonal demand have quickly unraveled. Prices have instead extended their downtrend under the weight of aggressive US-origin offers. Rather than gaining momentum from the late-August optimism, the market has sunk to multi-year lows, further pressured by persistently weak demand and cautious purchasing among downstream buyers... 09-09-2025
One door shuts in Brazil, another opens in Europe for US PE by Esra Ersöz
The United States’ polyethylene (PE) trade outlook is undergoing a sharp twist: Brazil, once a vital growth market, has moved to curb inflows with punitive anti-dumping duties, while the EU is weighing tariff relief that could make American resin far more competitive. Defying earlier concerns about US PE potentially facing retaliation from the EU on top of the existing 6.5% customs duty, US PE is now preparing to enjoy zero duties in Europe, which will help it compensate its loss in Brazil... 04-09-2025
From fears of retaliation to duty-free access: US polymers eye new gains in Europe by Esra Ersöz
Just months ago, US polymer exporters faced the prospect of fresh EU retaliation and were already weighed down by a 6.5% customs duty. Those concerns have now evaporated, with Brussels proposing to eliminate tariffs altogether —a move that, if approved, could unlock new growth opportunities for US producers not only in PE, but also in PP and engineering plastics... 02-09-2025
Europe’s petrochemical industry reshaped by deepening rationalization wave by Manolya Tufan and Esra Ersöz
Europe’s petrochemical industry is undergoing one of its most significant overhauls in decades, marked by a wave of permanent plant closures, divestments, and strategic exits across the continent. A combination of uncompetitive production economics, persistent demand weakness, ageing assets, global oversupply, and tightening environmental regulations has compelled global majors to downsize or exit key assets in the region. These decisions, long anticipated, have accelerated in both scale and pace... 01-09-2025
Polyethylene (PE) is a product group produced by the conversion of ethylene monomer through a process of polymerization. Polyethylene (PE) is the world's most common plastic in use today. It is divided into three groups: Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) and Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE)
Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is used in greenhouse covering materials, stretch and shrink films while Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) is mostly used in packaging and plastic bags. High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), on the other hand, is further divided into film, injection, blow molding and pipe grades and it is used in a variety of products and applications. HDPE film is used in the manufacture of bags and HDPE injection is used in the manufacture of fruit crates. HDPE blow molding is used in the manufacture of cleaning and cosmetic bottles while HDPE pipe is used in infrastructure applications.
When looked at the most important buyer and supplier countries in the Polyethylene (PE) market, the USA tops the list of net PE exporters as it accounts for over 20% of the world’s total PE exports. Although far behind the USA’s share, Singapore, Canada and Belgium follow in the list. China yet again ranks as the biggest importer, accounting for more than 30% of the world’s total PE imports as of 2020. China is followed by relatively smaller markets, such as Türkiye, Italy and Vietnam.
ChemOrbis Polyethylene (PE ) prices and Plastics News section contain information on the market trends, as well as supply-demand factors and production costs that determine the pricing, statistics on imports and exports, along with maintenance shutdowns, restarts, and new capacities related to PE facilities.
