Asian PET markets shift direction on weakening cost support
by Thi Huong Nguyen
Asian PET bottle markets failed to sustain their short upturn, which kicked off in the first half of April on the back of cost support and improving demand. The upward movement was followed by a two-week stability before prices experienced renewed drops over the week ending on May 3, given the falls in upstream markets and weakened buying power...

Can recent upturn be sustained in Asian PET bottle markets?
by Thi Huong Nguyen
PET bottle markets snapped a 3-week stability on cost-driven hikes across Asia over the week ending on April 12. Further contributing to sellers’ renewed confidence was a slight pickup in buying interest. However, the sustainability of the latest uptrend has been under doubt as overall demand has remained in the doldrums, defying the peak season...

Türkiye’s polymer markets grapple with subdued demand heading into April
by Merve Madakbaşı
The Ramadan lull has been pervading Türkiye’s polymer markets over the last few weeks, weighing on suppliers despite supportive costs. Thin price discussions amid deeper cash flow issues loomed over polyolefins, PVC, PET, and styrenics, with only a few days left before the Sunday election. Moreover, supply for certain polymers was relieved thanks to the arrival of delayed cargos...

European buyers switch to virgin PET as R-PET Flakes prices soar
by Manolya Tufan
Regional R-PET Flakes and Pellets markets have witnessed hefty price gains during March amid supply limitations. With the supply outlook remaining tight, some manufacturers decided to reduce their purchases of R-PET and switch to virgin PET bottle to avoid paying inflated levels for the former. Indeed, spot PET bottle markets mostly followed a stable path during March to hover at around a-year high...

FOCUS: Europe’s dependence on polymer imports grows amid lack of competitive power
by Manolya Tufan  and Esra Ersöz
Having lost its net-exporter status around 7 years ago, Europe has been a net importer for all polymers since then, except for PVC. Moreover, the ratio of exports to imports has been falling across the bloc, given declining output amid high production costs and economic slowdown on one side and global capacity additions on the other side...

About ChemOrbis PET prices and Plastic News

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is formed by polymerization of PTA and MEG feedstocks. While PTA is produced from PX (paraxylene), MEG is produced from ethylene. Therefore, when examining PET production costs, PX and ethylene should also be taken into consideration besides PTA and MEG.

There are three types of PET: bottle, textile and film. PET bottle grade is used in transparent plastic bottles that are frequently used in daily life. As can be deduced from its name, PET textile chips are used in the textile field, while PET film is used in packaging. In terms of global consumption, PET bottle grade is more commonly used than PET textile. POY, on the other hand, is a partially oriented yarn and it is a semi-finished product that corresponds to the next stage of textile chips.

Looking at the top PET suppliers on a country-based breakdown, China is by far the most important seller of PET bottle grade. China, which is self-sufficient in meeting its domestic demand and a net exporter thanks to its huge PET capacities, realizes more than 30% of the global PET trade. China is then followed by Taiwan and India. The USA, Japan and Italy are among the top three PET buyers, respectively. However, these countries' import purchases are relatively limited.

ChemOrbis Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) prices and Plastics News section contain information on the market trends, as well as supply-demand factors and production costs that determine the pricing, statistics on imports and exports, along with maintenance shutdowns, restarts, and new capacities related to PET facilities.
