Stats: Türkiye’s cumulative polymer imports hit 3-year low in Jan-Sept
by Merve Madakbaşı
Total polymer imports of Türkiye stood at 4,536,000 tons in Q1-Q3 this year while the cumulative figure indicated a nearly 8% decrease year over year, as per ChemOrbis Stats Wizard data. The volume also pointed to the lowest level since 2021 when the country’s polymer imports for the first three quarters totaled 4.3 million tons...

Asian PET bottle markets near 2-month highs; but lower costs cloud outlook
by Elif Sevde Yalçın
PET bottle markets across Asia continued their upward trend this week, despite visible declines in crude oil and monomer markets. The lingering bullish sentiment has been largely driven by cautious restocking from downstream factories and the previous sharp hikes in feedstock prices...

Europe’s R-PET markets see mixed trends in H1 Oct
by Marta D'Ortona
In Italy and Northwest Europe, R-PET markets opened October with rollovers to up and down variations, depending on the product, supplier and origin. Demand has been patchy across various application fields, which coupled with softening in the virgin PET markets led to modest fluctuations within the price ranges...

Europe’s polymer markets open Oct with drops; PVC defies the odds
by Manolya Tufan
Regional polymer markets started the month on a bearish note, influenced by weak economic conditions, easing supply levels and lower feedstock costs. However, PVC bucked the broader trend in the market, with fresh offers emerging with rollovers to slight increases from September...

China’s comeback: What’s in store for polymer markets after the break?
by Merve Sezgün
Chinese polymer players are stepping away from their desks this week as the country observes the National Day holiday. Despite the seasonal optimism brought by ‘Golden September, Silver October,’ demand recovery across most polymer segments has fallen short of expectations. Prices have struggled to gain momentum due to persistent oversupply, weaker international demand, and a sluggish domestic economy...

About ChemOrbis PET prices and Plastic News

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is formed by polymerization of PTA and MEG feedstocks. While PTA is produced from PX (paraxylene), MEG is produced from ethylene. Therefore, when examining PET production costs, PX and ethylene should also be taken into consideration besides PTA and MEG.

There are three types of PET: bottle, textile and film. PET bottle grade is used in transparent plastic bottles that are frequently used in daily life. As can be deduced from its name, PET textile chips are used in the textile field, while PET film is used in packaging. In terms of global consumption, PET bottle grade is more commonly used than PET textile. POY, on the other hand, is a partially oriented yarn and it is a semi-finished product that corresponds to the next stage of textile chips.

Looking at the top PET suppliers on a country-based breakdown, China is by far the most important seller of PET bottle grade. China, which is self-sufficient in meeting its domestic demand and a net exporter thanks to its huge PET capacities, realizes more than 30% of the global PET trade. China is then followed by Taiwan and India. The USA, Japan and Italy are among the top three PET buyers, respectively. However, these countries' import purchases are relatively limited.

ChemOrbis Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) prices and Plastics News section contain information on the market trends, as well as supply-demand factors and production costs that determine the pricing, statistics on imports and exports, along with maintenance shutdowns, restarts, and new capacities related to PET facilities.
