Two weeks into the war: Asia and Türkiye bear the brunt of petrochemical shock by Esra Ersöz
Two weeks into the Middle East war, the ripple effects across the global petrochemical chain are becoming increasingly clear. The region’s role as a key exporter of crude oil, LNG, propane and polyolefins has quickly transmitted supply shocks to markets around the world. Prices for feedstocks, monomers and polymers have all moved sharply higher as supply risks and logistics disruptions ripple through the chain... 16-03-2026
Türkiye’s polymer markets shoot up on supply crunch, soaring costs by Merve Madakbaşı
March has turned into a turbulent month for Türkiye’s polymer markets, with supply disruptions triggering price hikes rarely seen in recent years. Rising tensions in the Middle East in the final days of last month not only pushed supply chains into turmoil but also drove production costs into one of their most volatile periods in years... 13-03-2026
European PET bottle markets extend mild uptrend into Feb amid cost pressure and import delays by Manolya Tufan
European PET bottle markets have entered February with a firmer tone for a third consecutive month, as rising feedstock costs, persistent import delays and a gradual pickup in inquiries continue to support sellers’ pricing stance. While demand remains far from robust, tightening availability and stronger cost fundamentals have allowed producers and distributors to push through further increases, exceeding earlier expectations in some cases... 13-02-2026
Stats: Türkiye’s polymer imports hit a new all-time high in 2025 despite financial strains by Merve Madakbaşı
Türkiye’s total polymer imports reached a new record in 2025. The country imported approximately 6.3 million tons over the year, data from ChemOrbis Stats Wizard showed, surpassing the previous record of 6.2 million tons set in 2023. The volume marked a 5% increase from 2024. The fresh peak in imports coincided with an improving macroeconomic backdrop, particularly through mid-2025, when GDP growth accelerated to 4.8% year-on-year in Q2 after a softer 2% rise in Q1, before easing to 3.7% in Q3... 06-02-2026
India’s Union Budget 2026 targets infra boom, may fuel polymer demand surge by Shibu Itty Kuttickal
When India’s Finance Minister presented the 2026 Union Budget on February 1, the petrochemical industry was looking for a catalyst to break a surplus-heavy market. The answer arrived in a record INR12.2 trillion ($133.1 billion) capital expenditure outlay, positioning the state as the primary mover for polymer demand... 04-02-2026
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is formed by polymerization of PTA and MEG feedstocks. While PTA is produced from PX (paraxylene), MEG is produced from ethylene. Therefore, when examining PET production costs, PX and ethylene should also be taken into consideration besides PTA and MEG.
There are three types of PET: bottle, textile and film. PET bottle grade is used in transparent plastic bottles that are frequently used in daily life. As can be deduced from its name, PET textile chips are used in the textile field, while PET film is used in packaging. In terms of global consumption, PET bottle grade is more commonly used than PET textile. POY, on the other hand, is a partially oriented yarn and it is a semi-finished product that corresponds to the next stage of textile chips.
Looking at the top PET suppliers on a country-based breakdown, China is by far the most important seller of PET bottle grade. China, which is self-sufficient in meeting its domestic demand and a net exporter thanks to its huge PET capacities, realizes more than 30% of the global PET trade. China is then followed by Taiwan and India. The USA, Japan and Italy are among the top three PET buyers, respectively. However, these countries' import purchases are relatively limited.
ChemOrbis Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) prices and Plastics News section contain information on the market trends, as well as supply-demand factors and production costs that determine the pricing, statistics on imports and exports, along with maintenance shutdowns, restarts, and new capacities related to PET facilities.
