Asian PET markets in limbo between high costs and tepid demand
by Merve Madakbaşı
PET prices in China and Southeast Asia have followed a mostly steady trend this week after posting some gains in the first half of July. The firming trend has recently faltered since demand has been dampened by the resurgent Covid pandemic in the region...

Firmer crude and feedstock prices lift Asian PET despite slow demand
by Shibu Itty Kuttickal
The crude price rally in the previous weeks and the resultant increase in feedstock costs have led prices of Asian PET bottle to rise, after having stayed on a downtrend since the second half of April, market players said. But it remains to be seen whether the increase can be sustained, they added...

Escalating shipping costs hinder polymer demand in China, SE Asia
by Pınar Polat
Demand has been limited for polymers in Asia as the resurgence of Covid in Southeast Asia since April and the rise in new infections in China led to various lockdowns and restrictions on a country basis. Adding to Covid-hit demand has been skyrocketing freight costs, which are put under further upward pressure by pandemic-related workforce disruptions at ports and the recent port congestion in China...

Asian polymer markets unfazed by crude oil rally
by Pınar Polat  and Merve Sezgün
Import prices for most polymers in Asia have continued their downturn this week, defying the oil rally. Overall sentiment has remained weak across regional countries mostly due to mounting concerns over demand hit by the resurgence of COVID-19 particularly in Southeast Asia and India...

India’s polymer demand slowly heals pandemic-inflicted wounds
by Shibu Itty Kuttickal
Demand for polymers in India has seen a slow recovery as COVID-19 restrictions are gradually being eased in different parts of the country. But the pace of recovery has not energised the markets yet. Large-scale converters are mostly running close to full capacity while small units struggle to return...

About ChemOrbis PET prices and Plastic News

Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is formed by polymerization of PTA and MEG feedstocks. While PTA is produced from PX (paraxylene), MEG is produced from ethylene. Therefore, when examining PET production costs, PX and ethylene should also be taken into consideration besides PTA and MEG.

There are three types of PET: bottle, textile and film. PET bottle grade is used in transparent plastic bottles that are frequently used in daily life. As can be deduced from its name, PET textile chips are used in the textile field, while PET film is used in packaging. In terms of global consumption, PET bottle grade is more commonly used than PET textile. POY, on the other hand, is a partially oriented yarn and it is a semi-finished product that corresponds to the next stage of textile chips.

Looking at the top PET suppliers on a country-based breakdown, China is by far the most important seller of PET bottle grade. China, which is self-sufficient in meeting its domestic demand and a net exporter thanks to its huge PET capacities, realizes more than 30% of the global PET trade. China is then followed by Taiwan and India. The USA, Japan and Italy are among the top three PET buyers, respectively. However, these countries' import purchases are relatively limited.

ChemOrbis Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) prices and Plastics News section contain information on the market trends, as well as supply-demand factors and production costs that determine the pricing, statistics on imports and exports, along with maintenance shutdowns, restarts, and new capacities related to PET facilities.
