China, SE Asia PP outlook for 2024: Supply pressure to continue keeping markets on edge
by Merve Sezgün  and Esra Ersöz
2023 was a year of challenges in Asia’s PP markets due to the lasting impact of the post-pandemic decrease in demand. This resulted in consistently reduced operating rates in key downstream industries, influenced by sluggish global economies. While PP producers managed to counterbalance the challenge of new capacity additions by strategically cutting run rates, the supply landscape remains uncertain, especially with the anticipation of additional capacities, notably in China...

Deepening Red Sea bottleneck rattles markets; how does it reflect on polymers?
by Esra Ersöz
It was around mid-December when the security concerns first broke out upon the attacks on commercial vessels in the southern Red Sea. Throughout last week, right before the Christmas holidays, the crisis deepened, sending a jolt of alarm across the globe about supply chain disruptions. Surging freight rates for container shipments have ensued, which also buoyed the sentiment in polymer markets and encouraged sellers to seek price hikes...

African PP, PE markets buckled under economic challenges in 2023; 2024 will be another uphill battle
by Nada Samir  and Esra Ersöz
African polyolefin prices are ending 2023 on a weak note. Disregarding two short periods of an uptrend, PP and PE markets mostly followed a bearish run during 2023. Demand was under constant pressure from persistent inflation woes and mounting currency challenges across the continent. Current import prices are largely standing at their 3-year lows, suggests ChemOrbis Price Index. What will 2024 unfold?...

Türkiye PP, PE 2024 outlook: Macroeconomic recovery to remain pivotal
by Merve Madakbaşı
Polyolefin markets are about to end the year 2023 with a firmer sentiment on the back of arising supply concerns. Although PP and PE prices started December on a weak note, with most players focusing on their book closures instead of fresh engagements, the Red Sea turmoil has changed the scene very recently. Now, already-low netbacks in Türkiye, coupled with the recent logistic hurdles, point to a different story for early 2024...

Mid-Eastern PP, PE markets end 2023 on bearish note; what lies ahead in 2024?
by Nada Samir  and Esra Ersöz
In the Middle East, bearish sentiment permeated the marketplace for a second month in a row. Hovering around their more than 3-year lows, PP and PE markets remained pressured amidst globally weak fundamentals and regionally slack buying activities amid the year-end lull...

About ChemOrbis Polypropylene (PP) prices and Plastics News

Polypropylene (PP) is a product group produced by the conversion of propylene monomer through a process of polymerization. Polypropylene (PP) is the world's second largest polymer in terms of consumption. There are two main types of PP: Homo-PP and PP Copolymer.

Homo-PP (PPH) is further divided into various grades, such as raffia, injection, fiber, film, BOPP and non-woven. Homo-PP is used in various applications, such as sacks, gift wraps, carpet yarns, kitchenware, automotive parts, food packaging, sanitary pads, diapers and wet wipes. PP Copolymer, which is made more durable by the addition of ethylene monomer during the conversion process, is used in household appliances, automotive and electrical parts and pipe applications.

Looking at the most important net buyer and supplier countries in the polypropylene (PP) market, China stands at the top of the list of importing countries. As of 2020, China alone realizes 25% of the world’s total PP imports. China is followed by Türkiye, which imports 10% of the world’s total PP production, while Italy occupies the third place in rankings. South Korea, Malaysia and Germany comprise the top three main PP suppliers.
