PS and ABS markets buckle under feedstock pressure, weak demand in Europe by Manolya Tufan
Having closed June with massive decreases, European PS and ABS markets opened the new month with relatively smaller decreases of €65-80/ton amid feedstock correction and stalling demand. ChemOrbis Pride Index suggests spot ABS markets hit their lowest since late 2020 and PS markets since early 2021... 10-07-2023
Vietnam’s polymer markets buckle under an influx of Chinese cargoes by Merve Sezgün
The polymer markets in Vietnam have been under heavy pressure due to a flood of PP, PE, PVC, PET and PS cargoes offered from China at competitive levels. A lack of a meaningful recovery in domestic demand has led to Chinese polymer suppliers to direct their cargoes to export markets, particularly to Vietnam as the closest outlet... 26-05-2023
European ABS under pressure from aggressive imports, PS holds firm by Manolya Tufan
In Europe, ABS prices have bucked the PS trend recently, mainly due to the presence of aggressive Asian imports. A mixed pricing policy was observed for ABS in May, with rollovers to slight hikes still being valid as opposed to discounts in the distribution channel. On the other hand, PS sellers mostly held firm, citing the monthly styrene hike... 15-05-2023
Lackluster demand dominates Türkiye’s styrenics markets ahead of holiday by Merve Madakbaşı

European PS spirals down amid lower styrene, frail demand by Manolya Tufan
Regional PS prices mostly moved sideways or lost some ground last month after staging a brief recovery back in January. Polystyrene (PS) is formed by the polymerization of styrene feedstock. As styrene is formed by adding ethylene into the benzene feedstock, benzene and ethylene prices are also taken into consideration, in addition to styrene while examining the production costs of PS.
There are two types of PS, namely GPPS and HIPS. These are divided into subgroups as injection and extrusion. While plastic hangers, protective foam, disposable cutlery, CD boxes are made of GPPS, HIPS is used in white goods and electronics.
The world's largest PS buyer is again China by a long way. As of 2020, China alone carries out 35% of global imports. It was followed by Malaysia and Germany, with 6% and 5% shares, respectively. Taiwan ranks first among the top PS importers list, followed by Belgium and France.
ChemOrbis Polystyrene (PS) prices and Plastics News section contain information on the market trends, as well as supply-demand factors and production costs that determine the pricing, statistics on imports and exports, along with maintenance shutdowns, restarts, and new capacities related to PS facilities.
