Asian PVC continues to face downward pressure; all eyes on Taiwan’s Oct pricing
by Merve Sezgün
PVC markets in China, India, and Southeast Asia have been on a downward trajectory for nearly two months due to a combination of abundant supply and weak demand which have been exacerbated by economic headwinds in the region. While there was some initial optimism following India's decision to delay the implementation of its BIS certification and expectations of post-monsoon demand recovery, these hopes have been overshadowed by more pressing concerns...

Local PVC prices see fresh drops across Southeast Asian markets
by Thi Huong Nguyen
As of the week ending August 30, domestic PVC prices in Indonesia and the Philippines experienced renewed declines after weeks of stability. Meanwhile, prices in Thailand and Vietnam continued to fall, dominating local markets for another week. Even with Southeast Asia’s strengthening local currencies, prices still trended downward in US dollar terms, as shown in the graph below created by the ChemOrbis Price Index...

Stats: EU27’s H1 2024 polymer imports down on year; PVC sees sharpest decline
by Manolya Tufan
H1 2024 polymer imports to the EU27 from extra-union partners fell by 6% compared to the same period of 2023. Total polymer imports in the first half declined to around 4.7 million tons, marking the lowest volume since 2021...

BIS out of the way for now, Asian PVC players to vie for space in India
by Shibu Itty Kuttickal
A four-month reprieve from an expected government move to bring PVC and PP molding under certification by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) may bring back Asian buyers and sellers who had been holding off, watching how the development would unfold...

Stats: Türkiye’s overall polymer imports down by 7% in H1 on year
by Merve Madakbaşı
According to ChemOrbis Stats Wizard Pro, cumulative polymer imports in January-June eroded by 7% to 2.9 million tons from the same period in 2023. The fall came in tandem with macroeconomic struggles at home, let alone the adverse impact of a shipping turmoil that has pervaded the markets since late last year. In H1, Saudi Arabia (586,831 tons), the USA (384,204 tons), South Korea (265,221 tons), Russia (236,652 tons) and Egypt (175,667 tons) were the primary polymer suppliers, with respective market shares of 20%, 13%, 9%, 8% and 6%...

About ChemOrbis Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) prices and Plastics News

Unlike other polymers that are derived from crude oil and natural gas, Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is part of the chlor-alkali industry. The main raw material used to produce PVC is sodium chloride. Caustic soda and chlorine are made via the electrolysis of sodium chloride. While caustic soda has its own uses, ethylene dichloride (EDC) is made by the chlorination of ethylene and chlorine, and is used primarily in the production of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). In the final stage, PVC is produced by polymerization of VCM.

PVC is divided into two categories: emulsion PVC and suspension PVC. While emulsion PVC (E-PVC) has a limited area of use, suspension PVC (S-PVC) enjoys a greater area of use. S-PVC grades are characterized by K values. K67-68 is the most commonly used PVC type. PVC K67-68 is used in profile and pipe applications and has a direct relation to the construction industry. Due to its dependence on the construction sector, PVC is also directly affected by the economic performance of countries, either positively or negatively.

PVC K64-65 is also used in the manufacture of pipes and profiles. K58 is used in rigid applications, such as injection molding, and the manufacture of credit cards and food packaging. K70 is used in the manufacture of shoes, cables, hoses, shower curtains, tablecloths and stationery.

Looking at the top buyers and sellers on a country-based breakdown, the USA is at the top of the list of largest exporters with a market share of more than 20%. Taiwan is the second largest PVC supplier, followed by Germany. India is the top PVC buyer in global markets by a long way. Although China has reduced its dependence on imports with new PVC capacities it has commissioned over the last 20 years, it still ranks as the second largest PVC importer in the world. In addition, China has the world's largest acetylene-based PVC capacities. China is followed by Türkiye and Italy, having almost the same level of market share in PVC imports.

ChemOrbis Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) prices and Plastics News  section contain information on the market trends, as well as supply-demand factors and production costs that determine the pricing, statistics on imports and exports, along with maintenance shutdowns, restarts, and new capacities related to PVC facilities.
