ADD final findings spark price surge in India’s PVC market amid weak demand by Merve Sezgün
India’s PVC market saw its first major shake-up in weeks as the government confirmed anti-dumping duties (ADD) on suspension-grade PVC (S-PVC) imports, a move that immediately sent import and domestic prices higher, even as seasonal monsoon rains continued to suppress demand from key downstream sectors such as construction and agriculture... 21-08-2025
China’s old plant closure hype quickly fades in polymer markets by Merve Sezgün
China’s recent pledge to shutter aging petrochemical facilities briefly lifted sentiment in the polymer markets in mid-July, but the optimism faded quickly. Gains were seen mainly during the week of the announcement—the third week of July—when futures and some spot markets reacted positively. Since then, weak demand and abundant supply have reasserted pressure across PVC, PP, PE, and PET markets, making the policy boost little more than a “flash in the pan” in the short term... 13-08-2025
Slack demand drags import PVC prices to 5-year lows in Türkiye by Merve Madakbaşı
PVC sustained its softening trend as August began, with sluggish demand in Türkiye and global weakness continuing to keep it a buyers’ market. More sellers were compelled to grant discounts this week, as initial announcements—showing rollovers or minor drops of $5-10/ton—failed to spark buying interest from consumers. “The recent interest rate cut has had little impact on trading activity, with cash constraints and muted downstream demand still weighing on PVC,” players commented... 08-08-2025
Asian PVC markets bearish amid monsoon lull, tariff ambiguity and oversupply by Shibu Itty Kuttickal
Asian PVC markets continued to face headwinds as bearish sentiment prevailed across major regions amid seasonal slowdowns, geopolitical uncertainties, and persistent oversupply in early August. Obviously, the previous optimism driven by expectations of a new work plan from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), which aims to reduce capacity in China’s key sectors such as petrochemicals, had little impact on the short-term sentiment, with bearish factors coming to the forefront once again... 06-08-2025
India’s polymer export ambitions face headwinds as 25% US tariff looms by Shibu Itty Kuttickal
US President Donald Trump's 25% tariff on Indian imports, effective August 1st and linked to India's energy and defense ties with Russia, prompts re-evaluation across sectors. While broadly concerning, the plastics and polymers industry's impact may be more nuanced than initially feared... 05-08-2025
Unlike other polymers that are derived from crude oil and natural gas, Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is part of the chlor-alkali industry. The main raw material used to produce PVC is sodium chloride. Caustic soda and chlorine are made via the electrolysis of sodium chloride. While caustic soda has its own uses, ethylene dichloride (EDC) is made by the chlorination of ethylene and chlorine, and is used primarily in the production of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM). In the final stage, PVC is produced by polymerization of VCM.
PVC is divided into two categories: emulsion PVC and suspension PVC. While emulsion PVC (E-PVC) has a limited area of use, suspension PVC (S-PVC) enjoys a greater area of use. S-PVC grades are characterized by K values. K67-68 is the most commonly used PVC type. PVC K67-68 is used in profile and pipe applications and has a direct relation to the construction industry. Due to its dependence on the construction sector, PVC is also directly affected by the economic performance of countries, either positively or negatively.
PVC K64-65 is also used in the manufacture of pipes and profiles. K58 is used in rigid applications, such as injection molding, and the manufacture of credit cards and food packaging. K70 is used in the manufacture of shoes, cables, hoses, shower curtains, tablecloths and stationery.
Looking at the top buyers and sellers on a country-based breakdown, the USA is at the top of the list of largest exporters with a market share of more than 20%. Taiwan is the second largest PVC supplier, followed by Germany. India is the top PVC buyer in global markets by a long way. Although China has reduced its dependence on imports with new PVC capacities it has commissioned over the last 20 years, it still ranks as the second largest PVC importer in the world. In addition, China has the world's largest acetylene-based PVC capacities. China is followed by Türkiye and Italy, having almost the same level of market share in PVC imports.
