Acetylene based PVC gaining competitiveness in Asia

  • 14/04/2016 (03:57)
Players in Asia report that Chinese acetylene based PVC has been gaining competitiveness relative to conventional PVC recently, leading some traders to anticipate seeing stronger market share for acetylene based PVC in the week ahead.

A Taiwanese major announced their eagerly awaited May shipment prices with increases this week as had been expected by the market. A trader based in India commented, “The producer’s price hikes were in line with our expectations as we felt that potential competition from Chinese carbide based materials would prevent the seller from seeking larger increases. We feel that PVC prices are nearing a peak given the upcoming start of the monsoon season.” Another trader based in India added, “We believe that the Taiwanese producer will achieve deals at their new prices, even though initial response from buyers may be limited. Demand remains healthy but we expect to see some slow down in purchasing soon as buyers will be hesitant to secure May shipment cargoes which will arrive after the start of the monsoon season in June.”

A distributor reported, “The producer sold out their April allocation quickly after announcing their prices, but we believe that they will need a longer time to sell this month. Supply limitations are keeping prices firm, but buyers are starting to restrict their quantities given the upcoming monsoon season as well as drought conditions in some parts of India.”

A China based trader exporting acetylene based PVC commented, “We are holding our prices stable and are willing to give some discounts for buyers placing firm bids. The premium carried by conventional PVC relative to acetylene based PVC has been growing over the past few weeks and we believe that this will help us expand our sales.” A sheet manufacturer based in Malaysia stated, “Acetylene based PVC has gotten more competitive recently, although we will continue to purchase conventional PVC to meet our quality requirements. However, some pipe manufacturers may switch to acetylene based PVC to bring down their production costs.”
