BASF, SABIC and Linde inaugurate electrically heated steam cracking furnace

According to a press release on BASF’s website, the company, SABIC and Linde have jointly inaugurated the demonstration plant for the world’s first large-scale electrically heated steam cracking furnace.

The project was initially announced in March 2021. After three years of development, the demonstration plant will start operations at BASF’s Verbund site in Ludwigshafen, Germany.

The demonstration plant aims to accomplish olefin production by using electricity as a heat source. By doing so, the companies can reduce CO2 emissions by at least 90% compared to conventional steam crackers.

The plant will produce ethylene, propylene, and possibly higher olefins from hydrocarbon feedstock and is fully integrated into BASF’s existing steam crackers in Ludwigshafen.
