Ban on single-use plastic bags takes effect in Jakarta

According to local media sources, the Indonesian government’s ban on single-use plastic bags used in supermarkets, malls, and traditional markets is now effective in Jakarta starting from July.

Markets and malls are now required to provide customers with environmentally friendly shopping bags. Business owners who violate this obligation will be subject to sanctions in the form of written warnings, fines, license suspension, or revocation of business licenses, media sources added.

The regulation prohibiting single-use plastic bags was passed in December last year.
