China’s May polymer imports show weakest monthly performance of 2017

Data from ChemOrbis Import Statistics reveals that China’s total polymer imports in May posted a month over month decrease of around 1.7% to reach 1,393,144 tons, the lowest year-to-date level.

Nevertheless, the country’s cumulative polymer imports in the first five months of 2017 increased by 16% from a year earlier to hit a record high of 7,893,319 tons.

The top five polymer exporters to China in May were Saudi Arabia (220,138 tons), South Korea (192,254 tons), Taiwan (181,426 tons), Iran (130,168 tons) and the United Arab Emirates (136,787 tons).

As for product-based breakdown, China’s LDPE imports did not show any major changes from a month earlier to be reported at 182,559 tons. On a yearly basis, they were up by around 19%. Iran was the top LDPE supplier to China with 46,258 tons, followed by Qatar (20,240 tons).

HDPE imports fell by around 2.3% in May when compared to the previous month to reach 468,858 tons. On a yearly basis, however, HDPE imports increased 13.5%. Iran, which has been the top HDPE exporter to China since the beginning of this year, ranked second in May and lost its place as the top HDPE exporter to Saudi Arabia.

China’s HDPE imports from Iran were down by around 30% from a month earlier to reach 72,944 tons. Saudi Arabia was the top supplier with 104,676 tons.

LLDPE imports were mostly stable on a month over month basis to be reported at 199,903 tons in May. When compared to the same month of 2016, LLDPE imports were slightly higher. Saudi Arabia was the top supplier to China with 59,939 tons, followed by Singapore (38,390 tons) and Thailand (23,902 tons).

Imports for homo-PP decreased around 3.5% from April to reach 226,860 tons in May while they were also down by around 8% on a yearly basis. South Korea remained at the top of the homo-PP import list with 64,631 tons, followed by Saudi Arabia (32,214 tons) and Singapore (27,044 tons).

PP copolymer imports were down by around 14.7% month over month to reach 90,466 tons in May. On a yearly basis, PP copolymer imports declined around 6.7%. Singapore became the top exporter to China with 23,974 tons, followed by Taiwan (22,591 tons) and South Korea (16,687 tons). Imports from the United Arab Emirates witnessed a hefty decrease of 55.5% to reach 6,229 tons when compared to April.

China imported 51,119 tons of PVC in May, down by around 10.2% from the previous month. On a yearly basis, PVC imports declined 5.3%. The US stood at the top of the May PVC import list with 19,344, followed by Taiwan (17,989 tons) and Japan (9,384 tons).

Imports for PS climbed around 19% on a month over month basis to reach 44,017 tons in May. When compared to the same month of 2016, they were up by around 15.8% as well. Taiwan was the top PS exporter to China with 18,552 tons.

For ABS, the country’s May imports posted a monthly increase of 9.7% while they were up by around 6.5% from a year earlier as well. Taiwan was at the top of the ABS import list with 69,625 tons, followed by South Korea (34,850 tons).
