China’s exports, imports rebound on trade optimism in December
China’s exports in December rose 7.6% from a year earlier, following November’s 1.3% drop. Imports also rose 16.3% from a year earlier in December.
Total trade surplus was $46.7 billion, against forecasts for a $48 billion surplus, and up from surplus of $37.9 billion recorded in the previous month. China’s trade surplus with the US in December was $23.1 billion, down from $24.6 billion in November.
The latest data showed a modest recovery in the confidence of Chinese companies, boosted by the imminent signing of a US-China phase one trade deal. The signing of the agreement is expected to take place on January 15 in Washington, the US.
