China’s industrial production and retail sales posted slower growth in July year over year, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics. Industrial production increased 6% year over year in July, missing economists’ initial estimates of 6.6% growth and dropping below the 6.8% growth recorded in June,. Meanwhile, retail sales grew by 10.5% in July compared with a 10.6% rate of growth in June while economists had estimated that retail sales growth would remain at the 10.6% level in July.

Analysts commented that weaker growth in industrial output and retail sales suggest that the policies followed so far by the Chinese government may not prove sufficient to ensure that the government’s GDP growth target of 7% will be met.
