China’s polymer imports jump in August

ChemOrbis Import Statistics reveal that China’s total polymer imports in August climbed by around 16.6% on a month over month basis and by 18.4% on a year over year basis to reach 1,678,621 tons after last month’s fluctuations. This has been the largest import volume since March 2017.

The top five polymer exporters to China in August were Saudi Arabia (266,406 tons), South Korea (218,288 tons), Taiwan (210,221 tons), Iran (206,774 tons) and the United Arab Emirates (171,369 tons).

In product-based breakdown, China’s HDPE imports increased 15% in August when compared to the previous month to reach 535,256 tons. On a yearly basis, HDPE imports increased around 12.2% as well. Saudi Arabia was the top HDPE supplier to China with 115,885 tons, followed by the United Arab Emirates (101,748 tons) and Iran (96,728 tons).

LLDPE imports were 22.4% higher on a month over month basis to be reported at 280,242 tons in August. When compared to the same month of 2016, they increased by around 18.5%. Saudi Arabia was the top supplier to China with 78,471 tons, followed by Singapore (71,501 tons) and Thailand (35,159 tons).

LDPE imports significantly increased by 41.3% from a month earlier to be reported at 231,650 tons. On a yearly basis, they were up visibly by around 60%. Iran was the top LDPE supplier to China with 84,544 tons, followed by Qatar (21,141 tons).

Imports for homo-PP rose 19.4% from July to 250,176 tons in August while they edged up by 0.9% on a yearly basis. South Korea remained at the top of the homo-PP import list with 66,872 tons, followed by Saudi Arabia (43,884 tons) and Taiwan (27,896 tons).

PP copolymer imports increased visibly by 6% month over month to reach 107,975 tons in August. On a yearly basis, PP copolymer imports also increase 1.3%. Singapore was the top exporter to China with 28,712 tons, followed by Taiwan (28,035 tons) and the South Korea (16,338 tons).

China’s PVC imports surged 42.2% on a month over month basis in August to reach 75,465 tons, the highest monthly amount since March 2015. On a yearly basis, PVC imports considerably increased 57.2% in August. Taiwan stood at the top of the August PVC import list with 25,585 tons, followed by the US (24,426 tons) and Japan (12,342 tons).

Imports for PS were up by 7.3% from a month earlier to 45,190 tons in August. When compared to the same month of 2016, they posted an increase of around 10.2%. Taiwan was the top PS exporter to China with 20,442 tons.

For ABS, the country’s August imports climbed by 3.4% to reach 148,936 tons while they were up by around 12.8% from a year earlier. Taiwan was at the top of the ABS import list with 77,887 tons, followed by South Korea (45,635 tons).
