According to the European auto manufacturers’ association, ACEA, new passenger car registrations rose for the 21st consecutive month in the European Union in May. On a year over year basis, registrations were up 1.3% to 1,109,893 units. However, April’s figure was the weakest gain seen since the beginning of the current string of consecutive increases.

Among the major markets, France (-3.5%) and Germany (-6.7%) posted decreases while passenger car sales in Spain (+14.0%), Italy (+10.8%) and the UK (+2.4%) rose in April. The EU’s new member states (EU12), especially Poland (+11.0%) and the Czech Republic (+17.6%), contributed strongly to the gain in May.

In the first five months, meanwhile, new passenger car sales increased 6.8% to reach 5,805,367 units.
