According to media reports, the European Union will re-impose sanctions on over 40 Iranian shipping firms after a court annulled sanctions on the companies in question. Iran and six major powers - the United States, France, Britain, China, Russia and Germany- are currently in negotiations to reach an agreement over the country’s nuclear program.

In January, one of the EU’s major courts annulled sanctions on the 40 shipping companies and an Iranian bank, finding that the EU had not given valid reasons for saying these firms was supporting nuclear proliferation. However, the EU is set to re- impose sanctions on over 40 shipping firms, stating that the companies being re-added to the sanctions list include companies owned or controlled by Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) or which provide training, spare parts and services to IRISL or IRISL employees.
