According to local media sources, Egyptian Petroleum Minister Sherif Ismail revealed at a general assembly meeting with the Egyptian Ethylene and Derivatives Company (ETHYDCO) that they aim to establish transformational industries which will realize the highest revenues and added value to the Egyptian economy. In order to do that, the Minister highlighted the importance of ensuring maximum usage of petrochemical raw materials locally while seeking to discourage imports.

One of Egypt’s most important projects in their national plan is the production of ethylene and its derivatives in the Alexandria area through ETHYDCO. The project, which is currently under construction, is valued at 1.9 billion dollars. The designed capacity of the project stands at 460,000 tons/year ethylene, 400,000 tons/year polyethylene and 20,000 tons/year butadiene.
