According to a report released by Eurostat, inflation in the eurozone fell further in January. The inflation decreased to -0.6% in January from -0.2 in December, posting the lowest rate since July, 2009. The decrease was attributed to plunging energy costs.

The report showed that heating oil prices in the euro zone fell 26.8% year over year in January while fuels for transport decreased 15.8%.

Across the region, almost all of the countries suffered from lower inflation rates except Malta and Austria. The largest decreases were recorded in Greece (-2.8%) and Bulgaria (-2.3%) while Malta and Austria posted positive inflation rates of 0.8% and 0.5%, respectively.
