According to data released by the European Union’s statistics office Eurostat, retail sales in the Eurozone rose in May both on a monthly and yearly basis.

The data showed that retail sales increased by 0.4% on a monthly basis in May. This increase was reportedly driven by the rises of 1.7% in automotive fuel and of 0.6% in non-food products.

Among member states, the largest contribution to the monthly increase in retail sales came from Romania (4.3%), Lithuania (1.8%) and Hungary (1.7%) while the largest decreases were recorded in Finland (1.2%), Slovenia and the UK (both 0.9%).

The data showed that Eurozone retail sales also increased by 2.6% in May on an annual basis on the back of the rises in the sales of non-food products by 3.5%, in food, drinks and tobacco products by 2.1% and in automotive fuel by 0.9%.

Among member states, the largest contribution to the annual increase in retail sales came from Romania (14%), Slovakia (7.9%), and Ireland and Slovenia (both 7.7%).
