Eurozone retail sales rise at a slower pace in May

According to data released by the European Union’s statistics office, Eurostat, retail sales in the eurozone rose at a slower pace compared to the previous month in May. The region’s retail sales increased 0.2% on the month in May compared to a rise of 0.7% in April. Economists’ initial estimates had called for an increase of 0.1%. On a yearly basis, meanwhile, retail sales increased 2.4% compared to a gain of 2.7% in April. Economists’ initial estimates had called for a gain of 2.3% on the year.

Growth in food product sales fell from 1.3% in the previous month to 0.4% in May. Growth in non-food product sales, however, increased from 0.3% to 0.4% on the month.
