Eurozone retail sales rise for fourth consecutive month in Jan

According to data released by the European Union’s statistics office, Eurostat, retail sales in the eurozone increased for a fourth consecutive month in January. The region’s retail sales rose 1.1% month over month in January while sales increased 3.7% on a yearly basis. January’s figure was the strongest monthly increase posted since May 2013 and the highest annual increase seen since August 2005.

Automotive fuel sales climbed 3.2% month over month in January while non-food sales increased 1.2%.

According to a final purchasing managers index (PMI) released by Markit Economics, a composite index for manufacturing and service sectors in the eurozone increased to a reading of 53.3 from 52.6 in January.
