France to prohibit usage of plastic dishware by 2020

According to media reports, France will be the first country to ban the usage of all plastic dishware with a law that took effect last month and will enter into force as of 2020. The law involves all plastic dishware such as single use glasses, plates, spoons, knives and forks unless they are made of biological materials. It also affects coffee vending machines which will no longer be able to use plastic cups.

France’s decision was part of the country’s contribution to fight climate change; however, it is not supported by the whole EU. Ecologists support the decision but Pack2Go, a Brussels-based organization representing European packaging producers is fighting against it saying it violates European Union rules on the free movement of goods.

Earlier this year, France had also prohibited the usage of plastic bags in supermarkets.
