General Motors plans to shut five plants in 2019
GM cited changing customer preferences in the US and market-related volume declines in cars as the reasons behind the decision. According to data from Autodata Corp, the US auto sales are expected decline by 3.8% year-on-year in November.
In addition to the five North American plants that are planned to be shut down, the company stated that two international plants outside North America would be closed by the end of 2019.
The shutdowns will reportedly eliminate approximately 8,000 of GM’s salaried workers, and an additional 6,000 hourly workers are expected to either lose their jobs or be transferred to other plants.
