Germany’s retail sales rose by a larger than expected amount in April after declining for two months in a row, according to data released by the Federal Statistical Office of Germany (Destatis). Retail sales rose 1.7% on a calendar and seasonally adjusted basis in April after falling 1.4% in the previous month. Economists’ initial estimates called for an increase of 1% in April.

However, the country’s April retail sales growth slowed to 1% on the year following a 4.3% gain in March, falling below economists’ initial estimates, which called for a growth rate of 2.5%.

Among the main retail segments, sales for food products decreased 2.1% year over year in April while non-food sales climbed 2.4% from a year earlier.
