Germany’s retail sales rose more than expected in January, according to data released by the Federal Statistical Office of Germany (Destatis). Retail sales increased 2.9% on calendar and seasonally-adjusted terms in January compared with the previous month. Economists’ initial estimates called for 0.3% decline in a survey by the Wall Street Journal.

On a yearly basis, retail sales increased 5.3% in January compared the same month of 2014, the strongest pace since June 2010.

Among the main sales categories, sales for food, beverages and tobacco climbed 3.8% year over year while sales for non-food sectors grew 6.3% in January from the same month of 2014.
