Germany’s retail sales climb 0.9% in May

According to data released by Germany’s statistics office Destatis, the country’s retail sales rose 0.9% in adjusted terms in May. The April figure was also revised up to a decrease of 0.3% from a previously reported drop of 0.9%. On a yearly basis, retail sales rose by 2.6% in real terms compared with an upwardly revised increase of 2.7% in the previous month. Economists’ expectations called for a rise of 3% in May in a survey by Reuters.

Data also showed that retail sales for food, beverages and tobacco rose 2.2% while non-food sales also increased 2.8% in May.

In the first five months, meanwhile, Germany’s retail sales moved higher 2% in real terms compared with the same period in 2015.
