Germany’s retail sales fall unexpectedly in April

According to data released by Germany’s statistics office Destatis, the country’s retail sales fell 0.9% on the month in April, defying economists’ expectations which called for an increase of 0.9%. On a yearly basis, meanwhile, growth in Germany’s retail sales rose 2.3% in April from 0.6% in the previous month, which exceeded projections calling for a growth rate of 1.7% in April.

Data also showed that retail sales for food, beverages and tobacco climbed 1.4% while non-food sales also rose 2.8% in April. Turnover in retail trade rose 1.9% from January to April compared with the same period of last year.
