According to a statement on the company’s website, Switzerland-based INEOS group and South Africa’s Sasol broke ground on their HDPE joint venture at the INEOS’ complex in La Porte, Texas. The 50/50 joint venture, which will be operated by INEOS, is expected to produce 470,000 tons/year of bimodal HDPE and is set to be launched in 2016. The estimated value of the joint venture was reported at $500 million.

The location of the joint venture is of importance, especially Sasol, since the company has recently announced that they have reached a final investment decision on an $8.1 billion ethane cracker and derivatives complex in Lake Charles, Louisiana which is located close to the new joint venture. Sasol is aiming to significantly increase their chemical production in the US.
