US manufacturing activity expanded by a larger than expected amount in May, according to data reported by the Institute of Supply Management (ISM). The Institute’s manufacturing index rose to a reading of 52.8 from the previous month’s reading of 51.5. Any reading above 50 indicates expansion. Economists’ initial estimates called for an increase to a reading of 51.8 in a survey by Wall Street Journal.

According to ISM’s data, the new orders index increased to a reading of 55.8 from 53.5 in the previous month while ISM’s employment index was up to 51.7 from a reading of 48.3 in April. The export index declined to 50 from 51.5 while the production index decreased to 54.5 from April’s reading of 56.
