The India Meteorological Department (IMD), the country’s weather office, has announced the onset of the four-month Monsoon season in the country two days in advance against its June 1 normal date of landfall.

And in an unusual phenomenon, the rainy season has arrived simultaneously in both Kerala state, in the southern tip of the Indian peninsula, and in northeast India. Such a phenomenon happened seven years ago on 30 May 2017.

“The Southwest monsoon has set in over Kerala and has advanced into most parts of northeast India today,” said the IMD. The weather office has predicted that the rainfall during the June-September season is mostly likely to be “above normal”.
