Ineos Styrolution declares FM on ABS, PS to Switzerland, Italy

A source close to the company confirmed that Ineos Styrolution has declared a force majeure on its ABS, PS deliveries to Switzerland and Italy due to the railway traffic disruption in Europe.

This has stemmed from a land slip on part of the Rastatt tunnel in Germany by the first half of August and railway tracks above the tunnel warped as a result. As the Karlsruhe-Basel railway line is part of the important north-south corridor connecting the ports of Rotterdam, Hamburg and Antwerp with Switzerland and Italy, freight traffic needed to be shifted from rail to road or inland shipping.

Deutsche Bahn and the Rastatt tunnel consortium announced that the Karlsruhe-Basel railway is scheduled to be re-opened on October 7, according to media reports.

By early September, the producer announced increases of €200/ton on European PS and €125/ton on ABS as styrene costs soared while they didn’t revise them up following the force majeure declaration.

The source from the company reported, “PS supply is comfortable, but we declared a force majeure on ABS and PS deliveries to Switzerland and Italy for logistical reasons due to the railway disruption from Germany to Italy. We are delivering material through alternative routes and we think that this situation will be solved by October 1.”
