Italian government approves tax on plastic packaging

According to media sources, the Italian government approved the proposed tax on plastic packaging as of December 23 that will take effect as of July 2020. The law passed by 334 votes to 232 in the Chamber of Deputies after its approval by the Senate.
The plastic tax was cut down from €1000 per ton to €450 per ton, following protests from plastics industry associations.
It will apply to single-use plastic packaging manufactured in Italy, with the exception of compostable and recycled materials, medical products and packaging for medical goods. It will take effect from July 1, 2020, with the first payment due in October.
