Italy’s Versalis, the petrochemical subsidiary of Italy-based Eni SpA, has restarted its Porto Marghera cracker, according to market sources. The company had shut its 490,000 tons/year cracker in February 2014 and had subsequently decided to permanently close the plant in order to covert the site to a facility for bio-based chemical production.

Sources stated that the company restarted the cracker after signing an agreement with Shell to provide supplies of ethylene and propylene during a shutdown at Shell’ cracker in Moerdijk, the Netherlands. The restart of the cracker will be a temporary measure.

Shell’s Moerdijk cracker has been offline since the beginning of October, 2014 and reportedly will come online by the third quarter of this year.
