Italy’s Versalis to restart its Porto Marghera cracker

According to market sources, Italy’s Versalis, the petrochemical subsidiary of Italy-based Eni SpA, is planning to restart its steam cracker in Porto Marghera in February. The company had shut the cracker earlier this year in order to prepare for a €200 million ($257 million) investment project at the site. The cracker has a production capacity of 490,000 tons/year.

Sources reported that the lack of ethylene supply in Northern Europe has led the company to restart its cracker. The company will reportedly help to meet Shell’s supply needs after Shell shut its 900,000 tons/year Moerdijk cracker in the Netherlands in October because of a steam leak.
