According to data from Italy’s statistical office Istat, the country’s industrial production rose 0.9% month over month in May following a decrease of 0.3% in April to beat economists’ initial estimates, which called for a gain of 0.3% in a survey conducted by the Wall Street Journal. On a yearly basis, meanwhile, Italy’s industrial output posted a calendar adjusted increase of 3% in May.

The increase was attributed to a gain in investment-goods output, which rose 2.3% in May from a month earlier. The data also revealed that intermediate goods output rose 0.6% on the month in May while production in the energy sector expanded 1.7%. However, production of durable consumer goods slipped 1.5% in May.
