Italy’s retail sales, factory orders miss estimates in March

According to data released by Italy’s statistics office Istat, the country’s retail sales and factory orders fell below estimates in March. Industrial orders declined 0.3% on the month in March after increasing 0.8% in the previous month. Economists’ initial estimates called for an increase of 0.7%. On a yearly basis, however, industrial orders rose 2.7% compared with an increase of 2% in the previous month.

The country’s retail sales, meanwhile, posted a seasonally adjusted decrease of 0.1% on the month in March, missing economists’ initial estimates which called for an increase of 0.2%. On a yearly basis, sales were also down 0.2%. Sales for non-food products fell 0.8% on the year while food sales rose 0.7%.

In the first quarter of this year, however, retail sales increased 0.3% when compared to the same period of 2014.
