Italy’s retail sales, factory orders up in April

According to data released by Italy’s statistics office Istat, the country’s retail sales followed a stable trend while factory orders unexpectedly increased in April. Industrial orders posted a seasonally adjusted increase of 5.4% on the month in April following a revised decrease of 0.2% in the previous month. On a yearly basis, meanwhile, industrial orders jumped 7.9% compared with a gain of 2.7% in the previous month, increasing for the third consecutive month. Industrial sales, however, edged down 0.2% in April after showing an increase of 0.9% in the previous month.

The country’s retail sales, meanwhile, posted a seasonally adjusted increase of 0.7% on the month in April, exceeding economists’ initial estimates which called for a decrease of 0.1%. On a yearly basis, sales were stable. Economists’ preliminary expectations had called for a decrease of 0.5% on a yearly basis. Sales for food products posted a slight decrease of 0.8% on the year while non-food sales edged up 0.6%.
