Italy’s retail sales unexpectedly declined in September, according to data from the country’s statistics office, Istat. The country’s retail sales edged down 0.1% on the month in September, missing economists’ estimates, which called for an increase of 0.5%. The data also showed that retail sales both in food and non-food stores slipped 0.1% each from a month earlier.

On a yearly basis, however, Italy’s retail sales rose 1.5% in September after increasing 1.3% in August, rising faster than economists’ estimates calling for a gain of 1.4%.

Istat also stated in a separate report that Italy’s industrial orders declined 2% in September following a drop of 5.2% in August. Domestic demand weakened 1% while non-domestic demand slid 3.2% in September.
