Japan’s Idemitsu and Mitsui plan to consolidate ethylene complexes
The two companies have been jointly operating two ethylene facilities in Chiba since 2010. Idemitsu’s ethylene complex has a production capacity of 370,000 tons/year and Mitsui’s has 550,000 tons/year.
The companies plan to close Idemitsu’s facility and consolidate production at Mitsui’s plant. The facility will be operated by a limited liability partnership (LLP) or a joint venture starting as of fiscal year 2027.
“Japanese ethylene complexes continue to be forced to operate at a low rate due to both the opening of large new additional petrochemical complexes, mainly in China, and the diminishing domestic ethylene demand,” the companies stated.
