Japan’s JX Nippon shuts its propylene unit for indefinite period

According to media reports, Japan’s JX Nippon Oil & Energy shut its propylene unit at its Kawasaki petrochemical site on October 5 for an indefinite period due to weak margins. The unit is able to produce 140,000 tons/year of propylene. However, the company continues to operate its naphtha-fed steam cracker at high rates.

Some players have recently reported that new plant startups have caused oversupply issues in the Asian propylene market, which have hurt producers’ margins.
