Japan’s economy contracts less than expected in Q2

Japan’s economy contracted at a 1.2% annual rate in the second quarter, slower than the initially estimated contraction of 1.6%, according to media reports. The less than expected contraction was attributed to stronger inventory levels, which rose 0.3% in the three months ended in June. However, capital spending fell 0.9% on a quarterly basis, exceeding initial estimates calling for a 0.1% decline.

Analysts do not expect to see acceleration in the economy in the third quarter, citing Japan’s plunging industrial production in July, sluggish external demand and China’s slowing economy as the main factors hampering growth expectations.
