Japan’s economy falls into technical recession in Q3

According to media reports, Japan’s economy fell back into recession in the third quarter, shrinking by 0.8% on an annualized basis following a 0.7% contraction in the second quarter. Economists define a recession as two consecutive quarters of contraction. On a quarterly basis, meanwhile, Japan’s economy contracted 0.2% in the third quarter while economists’ estimates called for a decline of 0.1%.

In the third quarter, Japan’s business spending declined 1.3%, posting the second consecutive decline, while private consumption edged up 0.5% from the previous quarter.
