According to media reports, The Louisiana First Circuit Court of Appeal has given air permits to Formosa’s $9.4 billion one-of-a-kind petrochemical complex, namely Sunshine Project, that will be built in St. James Parish, Louisiana. The court previously annulled the permits for the mega project in 2022.

The people living in the area have been protesting the project since 2022, citing its negative impacts on the environment.

The first phase of the mega project will include a 1.2 million tons/year ethane cracker, a 400,000 tons/year LLDPE, a 400,000 tons/year HDPE, a 600,000 tons/year PDH, and a 600,000 tons/year PP plant.

The project’s second phase will consist of a 1.2 million tons/year ethane cracker, a 400,000 tons/year HDPE and a 400,000 tons/year LLDPE plant.

However, sources claimed that Formosa cannot begin the construction of the Sunshine project without wetlands permit from the US Army Corps of Engineers.
