According to the Nikkei Manufacturing Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI), Malaysia’s manufacturing sector continued to weaken in May. A gauge of the country’s manufacturing activities rose slightly to a reading of 47.2 from April’s five month low of 47.1. Any reading above 50 points suggests an expansion while any reading below that level points to a contraction.

The data showed that production and total new orders posted sharp declines in May; however, new exports orders have reportedly benefited from the weak ringgit, which has enabled Malaysian exporters to improve their competitiveness in global markets.
