According to data from Malaysia Statistics Department, Malaysia’s industrial production increased by 4.7% in February on the year following a rise of 3.5% in January. The growth rate missed the expectations of an increase of 6.1%.

The increase in February was attributed to the growth in manufacturing by 6.5% after an increase of 4.6% in January as well as a rise in the electricity sector by 1.5% following an increase of 1.1% in the previous month. However, the mining sector posted a more modest increase by 0.4% in February after a 1.1% increase recorded a month earlier mainly due to a further decrease in Crude Oil Index by 4.7%.

Among the sub-sectors, the largest increases were recorded in food, beverages and tobacco (15.9%), electrical and electronic products (8.1%) as well as petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products (3.7%).
