According to data from Malaysia Statistics Department, Malaysia’s industrial production increased by 4.7% in December on the month. The growth rate beat the expectations of 4%. However, it was slower than the 6.2% recorded in November. The country’s industrial production was also up by 2.7% in December on a yearly basis.

The increase was attributed to the growth in manufacturing (4.3%), mining (5.8%) and electricity (6.1%).

Among the sub-sectors, the largest increases were recorded in food, beverages and tobacco (8.8%), electrical and electronic products (5.3%) and petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products (3.7%).

The data showed that production in the mining sector grew further by 5.8% in December after an increase of 4.7% in November on the back of crude oil production while growth in production in the electricity sector was down to 6.1% in December from 9.7% recorded in November.
