According to an official data released by Malaysia’s Department of Statistics, the country’s industrial output rose 4.5% in May from a year earlier, beating economists’ initial estimates, which called for a gain of 3% in a survey conducted by the Wall Street Journal. Higher production in the mining sector was cited as the main reason behind the yearly increase. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, meanwhile, industrial production rose 1.5%.

The data showed that output from mining sector increased 3% in May compared with the same month of previous year while electricity output was up 1.2% on the year.
